Super Duplex Stainless Steel Chemical Composition

The high performance of super duplex stainless steel is derived from its rich alloy content. The elevated levels of Chromium, Molybdenum, and Nitrogen are key to its exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.

Super Duplex Material Grade

  • UNS S32750: Known for excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, suitable for harsh environments such as offshore platforms and chemical processing plants.
  • UNS S32760: Highly-alloyed grade containing tungsten and copper, offering greater corrosion resistance for extremely corrosive applications such as sulfuric and phosphoric acid environments.

Super Duplex Steel Applications

  • Oil & Gas: Pipelines, risers, offshore platforms for seawater and chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance.
  • Chemical Processing: Heat exchangers, pressure vessels, tanks handling aggressive media like sulfuric acid.
  • Marine & Shipbuilding: Propellers, shafts, desalination plants requiring high corrosion resistance.
  • Pulp & Paper Industry: Bleaching equipment, digesters resistant to corrosive chemicals and high temperatures.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Super duplex stainless steel is a high-alloy two-phase (austenite + ferrite) stainless steel with a PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) above 40. It contains higher levels of chromium (24–26%), molybdenum (3–5%), and nitrogen compared to standard duplex grades, giving it exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking.
Duplex 2205 (UNS S32205) has a PREN of ~35 with tensile strength of 620 MPa, while super duplex 2507 (UNS S32750) has a PREN above 40 and tensile strength of 800 MPa. Super duplex 2507 offers significantly better corrosion resistance and strength, making it suitable for more aggressive environments like offshore oil & gas and seawater applications.
The two primary super duplex grades are UNS S32750 (2507 / SAF 2507, DIN 1.4410) and UNS S32760 (Zeron 100, DIN 1.4501). S32750 is the most widely used, while S32760 contains additional tungsten and copper for enhanced resistance in sulfuric and phosphoric acid environments.
Yes, super duplex steel can be welded, but it requires strict control of heat input, interpass temperature (max 150°C), and use of matching or over-alloyed filler materials. Proper shielding gas and post-weld solution annealing may be required to restore the optimal austenite/ferrite balance and corrosion resistance.
Super duplex steel is used in offshore oil & gas (subsea pipelines, risers, manifolds), chemical processing (heat exchangers, pressure vessels), marine (desalination plants, seawater systems), pulp & paper (bleaching equipment), and power generation industries where extreme corrosion resistance and high strength are required.
Our super duplex steel products conform to ASTM A790 (pipes), A789 (tubes), A240 (plates/sheets), A182 F53/F55 (flanges/forgings), A276/A479 (bars), and A815 (fittings). All products are supplied with EN 10204 3.1/3.2 mill test certificates and can be tested per ASTM A923 and ASTM G48 Method A.
