Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Monel is a nickel-copper alloy (typically 63–70% Ni, 27–33% Cu) known for exceptional corrosion resistance in seawater, acids, and alkalis. Its unique combination of high strength, toughness, and resistance to a wide range of corrosive environments makes it ideal for demanding marine and chemical applications.
Monel 400 is a standard nickel-copper alloy with good corrosion resistance and moderate strength. Monel K500 is an age-hardened version with added Aluminum and Titanium, offering nearly three times the yield strength (655 MPa vs 170 MPa) and higher hardness, while retaining the same corrosion resistance.
Monel is widely used in marine engineering (seawater piping, pump shafts), oil & gas (offshore drilling, refinery equipment), chemical processing (reactors, heat exchangers), aerospace (fasteners, springs), and power generation (nuclear plants, turbines) due to its outstanding corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
Our Monel products comply with ASTM/ASME standards including B127, B163, B164, B165, B366, and B564. They meet UNS N04400 (Monel 400) and N05500 (Monel K500) designations, and are equivalent to WNR 2.4360/2.4375, BS NA 13/NA 18, and AFNOR NU-30M/NU-30AT standards.
Yes, Monel 400 can be welded using GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), and SMAW processes with matching Monel filler metals. The material should be clean and free of sulfur contamination before welding. Monel K500 requires post-weld age hardening to restore its full mechanical properties. Preheating is generally not required.
We supply Monel in a wide range of forms including Pipes & Tubes (½" – 12" NB), Sheets & Plates (0.5–50 mm thick), Bars & Rods (10–200 mm dia), Flanges (½" – 48", Class 150–2500), Fittings (½" – 24"), and Fasteners. Custom sizes and lengths are available on request.
