Hastelloy is a trademarked name for a group of corrosion-resistant metal alloys primarily made of nickel, with significant amounts of molybdenum, iron, cobalt, and other elements. It is widely used in chemical processing, aerospace, marine, and other industries where extreme corrosion resistance is required.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Hastelloy is a nickel-based superalloy with high concentrations of molybdenum, chromium, and other elements. Unlike stainless steel, Hastelloy offers far superior resistance to highly aggressive chemicals including hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and chlorine. It also maintains its strength and corrosion resistance at much higher temperatures than standard stainless steel grades.
Hastelloy C-276 offers excellent resistance to both oxidizing and reducing environments and is the most widely used grade. C-22 has higher chromium content (22%) giving it better resistance to oxidizing media and pitting. Hastelloy B-2 contains no chromium and is specifically designed for resistance to hydrochloric acid and other strongly reducing environments.
Hastelloy is extensively used in chemical processing (reactors, heat exchangers, piping), pollution control (flue gas desulfurization), aerospace (jet engine components), marine engineering, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and nuclear waste processing. Its ability to withstand extreme chemical and thermal environments makes it indispensable in these sectors.
Yes, Hastelloy alloys have excellent weldability. They can be welded using GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), and SMAW processes with matching filler metals. The material should be in the annealed condition before welding, and post-weld annealing may be required for critical applications to restore full corrosion resistance and relieve residual stresses.
Hastelloy C-276 and C-22 can withstand continuous service temperatures up to approximately 1090°C (2000°F) in oxidizing environments. Hastelloy B-2 is suitable for use up to around 870°C (1600°F). These alloys retain their mechanical strength and corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures, making them ideal for high-temperature chemical and industrial applications.
We supply Hastelloy in a wide range of product forms including Pipes & Tubes, Sheets & Plates, Bars & Rods, Flanges, Fittings (elbows, tees, reducers), Fasteners, and Welded Tubes. All products are available in grades C-22, C-276, and B-2, with custom sizes and lengths available on request to meet specific project requirements.
